Portable Camera Obscura
Westlake High School
Fall 2021 Engineering Project
For our introductory project to our Engineering course, we were tasked with creating a portable version of the camera obscura phenomenon. This phenomenon is one where if you were to let light come through a hole and into a dark room onto a wall you would see the image outside but flipped vertically.

To make the camera obscura portable but also easy to use and understand, we decided to have you wear it like a helmet. There was a beanie inside in the hole on the bottom where you would put your head through and look above the wall of the box inside to see the white screen. You would then pull the tab that would open the aperture on the back wall of the box and let in the image from behind you. All of this was detailed in the image instructions that I designed. We also made sure to line the corners with foam tubing so that it would survive a fall, and used paper clips and twine to make sure the pulley to open the flap could be easily adjusted and secured.
